Rocholl taking kicks and punts for surging Lions

Columbia kicker Jon Rocholl was just a freshman when he launched a 47-yard field goal between the posts in a game against Penn last season.

Despite his efforts, the Lions were blown out - their eighth loss in a row to the Quakers.

But the kicker would continue to have his own success throughout his first season, making 11 of 15 field goals, including 5 of 7 from the 40-to-49-yard range.

His seven consecutively made field goals was a new Columbia record, one that he came just a kick short of tying earlier this season.

The sophomore's success from his rookie year has continued into this season, and he has already made seven field goals on eight attempts.

But Rocholl's adjustment to college football was more than an average challenge - the kicker also serves as Columbia's starting punter.

It is a dual role that Rocholl has played since his junior year of high school. When his team's punter graduated, the position was left open.

"I didn't really know what I was doing at first, but then I just kept getting better and better," Rocholl said. "When I came to Columbia, they gave me the chance to do both kicking and punting, and I ended up winning both of the jobs."

The opportunity to play two positions gives the sophomore the unique ability to help the Lions out from both sides of the field.

"I try to bail the team out whenever the offense stalls on the drive," Rocholl said. "I try to help by either getting the defense good field position or being able to put three points up on the board."

Rocholl's contribution to the team has been critical to Columbia's success this season as he has accounted for one-third of the Lions' total points this season. His 30 points so far make him the highest-scoring kicker in the Ivy League.

And Rocholl's versatility extends beyond kicking - he had two tackles and a forced fumble against Princeton.

But Rocholl is the first to say that his success depends largely on the strengths of his teammates.

"We have a great long snapper and holder on the team," Rocholl said. "Without them, I wouldn't be able to do anything, so I owe a lot of credit to those guys."

Rocholl's most recent test came in a nail-biter against Georgetown in which he made three field goals, kicking the last with just two minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Georgetown would score on the ensuing drive to come within two, making Rocholl's field goal the game-winner.

But his production on offense isn't his only talent - he helps Columbia keep the opponent in check with his punting ability.

Rocholl can be counted on to help keep the opponent at bay, punting for an average of 40.1 yards, third-best in the Ivies.

And although a field goal wouldn't have made up for Columbia's 26-point deficit against Penn last year, perhaps this time the Lions' will keep it close enough for Rocholl to snap the streak of bad luck against the Quakers.
