A pair of stamp-crossed lovers

Take their real-estate into their own hands

The Lake House

Starring: Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock

Director: Alejandro Agresti

Rated PG

Alejandro Agresti's The Lake House reunites Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, but don't get too excited. While the film is reminiscent of the traditional chic flick, it can't seem to get past that whole "boy meets girl" part. In fact, that's the film's premise; these two crazy kids can't seem to meet one another. This disasterous remake of the Korean film Mare, II is further proof that Americans don't know how to translate Asian cinema (as if The Grudge wasn't enough).

Follow the story of Alex Wyler (Reeves) and Kate Forster (Bullock) and their correspondence via the mailbox of a lake house that they both resided in but two years apart. It is nice to see this return to traditional communication between a man and woman; somehow text messaging doesn't have the same romanticism to it. The two aren't quite sure how this phenomenon is happening and just in case you're thinking the film will provide some insight, rest assured it won't. The film makes no attempt to explain this magical correspondence and will most likely leave you wondering what the hell just happened. Reeves' performance is unbelievably lackluster and the plot ambiguities only contribute to the film's overall mediocrity.

The Lake House wasn't all bad though. The concept of two lovers who can't seem to exist in the same present was intriguing and even romantic. Ultimately the film could be mildly entertaining if you're prepared to overlook Hollywood's many inconsistencies.
