M. Track leads way at Princeton

The veterans of the Penn men's track team maintained a stranglehold on the middle-distance events, taking six of 19 events in a quad meet at Princeton on Saturday.

Seniors Courtney Jaworski and Mark Materna won the 800- and 1500-meters, respectively.

The Quakers tied Rutgers for the most wins, while Princeton won five and Villanova two.

Head coach Charlie Powell's team found the winner's circle in more than just one area.

"We were good just about everywhere," Powell said.

The 4x100m relay team was one such bright spot. Freshmen Kevin Benjamin and Jason Ellis and seniors Peter Cochran and Jaworski beat second-place Princeton by over half a second in a time of 41.10.

Powell said the four tried to be "conservative with [their] handoffs" because they were running in their first race together.

In an event where handoffs and spacing are crucial to success, the newly formed team proved to be mistake-free.

"We started laughing," Powell said of his reaction to the new group's surprisingly strong first outing.

Two other freshmen took first in their respective events, as Sam Shepherd and Stephen Bachman won the 400m and discus.

Kyle Calvo won the long jump, but his biggest achievement of the weekend was a fourth-place score of 7,370 in the decathlon.

"The three guys he finished behind were All-Americans," Powell said. He deemed the performance of the NCAA-bound sophomore as one of the most impressive.

Powell described Calvo's effort as "national-caliber" because it broke the 7,000 barrier. Freshman Max Westman joined Calvo above that bar with a 7,040 total.

The Quakers' strong showing came despite some key absences, including David Whitehurst, who missed the meet to attend a funeral.

Penn heads back to Princeton for the Larry Ellis Invitational next weekend before competing in the Heptagonal Championships at Franklin Field, May 6-7.
