Track starts outdoor season in Raleigh

Courtney Jaworski's specialty is the 800-meters -- in November, men's track coach Charlie Powell described his success in the event at the indoor Heptagonal Championships as "a given."

But as the All-American showed this weekend, he is using the outdoor season to broaden his resume.

The senior distance runner did not compete in the 800m event. Instead, he won the 1500m and helped the accomplished 4x800m relay team to a victory last weekend at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.

The meet, held at Paul Derr track at North Carolina State University, was the first of the outdoor season for both the men's and women's teams.

Jaworski's time of 3:47.52 was the ninth-best all-time for Penn in the 1500m, but relay teams on both the men's and women's side garnered the majority of the accolades for the Quakers.

On Saturday, the women's 4x800m complemented the men's victory with a third-place showing in the event, finishing behind first-place Tennessee with a time of 9:02.38.

The Volunteers had already thwarted Penn one day before, denying the 1600m sprint medley team a victory by only seven hundredths of a second.

Running in the same heat, Tennessee clipped the line just before the Red and Blue. The Volunteers finished in 3:57.15, a fraction of a second faster than Penn's 3.57:22.

The women had a good showing at longer distances as well, finishing in a respectable fifth place with a time of 19:06.22 in the 4x1500m relay.

In the men's 4x100m relay, Penn came in fourth with a time of 41.92.

In the shotput, senior Charity Payne contributed one of Penn's best individual performances, placing seventh in a crowded field. The former Heps champion put the shot 13.77 meters.

Junior Michael LaQuaglia added a 15th-place finish out of 41 runners in the men's 10,000m in a time of 30:45.03.

The men's and women's coaches could not be reached for comment.
