Call them the disciples of the Bike Church.

Neighborhood Bike Works, located in the basement of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, has garnered much praise for its youth outreach programs. But on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights, the facility transforms into a haven for adult bicycle enthusiasts. Bike buffs and novices come from near and far to socialize, hunt down used bike components and learn about repairs. A diverse group that ranges from Penn students to veteran bike messengers and that spans socioeconomic classes is united by a love for bicycle maintenance.

Anyone who walks in has access to the Bike Church's specialized tools and knowledgeable staff of volunteers. Josh Perakis, an ex-bike messenger, tries not to assist too much in repairs, instead advocating learning by doing. In this way, the Bike Church provides a place where old bikes can find salvation.
