An altercation at the Bridge: Cinema de Lux sent two women to the hospital Saturday night.
The 40th and Walnut theater played host to what witnesses described as a fight between two groups of women at about 10 p.m.
According to police, three women not affiliated with the University were cited for disorderly conduct following the incident.
Division of Public Safety officials said the cause of the altercation is unknown but said the women previously knew each other. Penn Police weren't able to provide details on injuries sustained.
But according to one witness, an employee of the Fresh Grocer across the street from the Bridge who declined to give his name, the event was no simple fight.
The witness said that three women were arguing with two others inside the ticket sales area of the Bridge.
The witness, who wasn't able to ascertain the cause of the argument, said he saw a member of the first party jump on one of the other two women and knock her to the floor. He said she then began pulling the victim's hair and hitting her in the face and back with what the employee described as a T-shirt or sock containing glass or ice.
He said that one of the women from each group fled the scene following the fight. The employee estimates that the whole incident lasted 10 minutes, with law enforcement officials arriving before the fight ended.
Penn Police said they first received news of the disturbance at around 10 p.m. Saturday evening.
According to Philadelphia Police Det. John Halligan, two of the three women were juveniles. Penn Police couldn't provide further information on the individuals, but said that the other alleged offender was 18.
One of the women was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Another woman sought treatment at a separate medical facility.
The Bridge manager who was on duty when the fight happened refused to comment.
Both Penn and Philadelphia police responded to the incident.
Penn Police Public Safety officials said that all three women were transferred to the Southwest Detective Division at 55th and Pine streets for further investigation.
Bob Hanna, MarBar's general manager, said he saw the three women being carted off, but wasn't worried about the incident. Both the Marathon Grill and MarBar, which are located next to and above the Bridge respectively, have their own security staff.
"We deal with a totally different crowd," he said regarding his college customers. "They come in and have a good time."
On Feb. 21 last year, gunshots were fired near the Bridge. There were no injuries, but several windows were broken. The shots were the result of a confrontation.
