O.A.R. to headline Fling concert

SPEC confirms rock band was chosen for annual spring show

Get ready for a revolution.

Maryland-based rock band Of A Revolution, or O.A.R., will headline the annual Spring Fling concert April 7.

The tour date was posted on an Atlantic Records Web site advertising the band's spring schedule.

Social Planning and Events Committee Concerts co-Director Matt Mizrahi, a Wharton and Engineering senior, confirmed that the group will perform as the main act. No opening bands have been announced yet.

The band will play in Wynn Commons, a venue that can hold approximately 2,500 and that Mizrahi hopes to fill.

"They're an exciting band to watch and to listen to," he said. "It was a band we thought matched the preferences of Penn students and the venue and the spirit of the Fling concert very well."

O.A.R. was one of the top choices students listed in an online survey SPEC Concerts conducted last November to gauge student preferences. While Mizrahi said O.A.R. wasn't the top band, it was "one of the most popular choices" along with artists like Ben Folds, Guster and the Roots.

Over 500 students responded to the survey.

Staff, students and their guests will be able to purchase tickets for the Fling show for $20 starting March 20. The following week they will cost $25 and then $30 on the day of the concert.

Mizrahi declined to comment on how much money SPEC Concerts paid for the band.

While Sonic Youth and Cat Power -- the groups that played at Wynn Commons for last year's festival -- drew small crowds compared to years past, Mizrahi is confident O.A.R. will appeal to students.

"They're a great live band," he said. "The great thing about Wynn Commons, it sort of fosters this crowd atmosphere. ... [O.A.R. is] very much in tune with that kind of attitude."

SPEC Concerts also planned a show at Irvine Auditorium last semester with Howie Day, which received generally positive reviews.

Fling concerts in the past five years have featured Wyclef Jean, Reel Big Fish, Busta Rhymes and Ben Harper.
