News Brief

Bags of trash are finally not part of the scenery on each floor of Hamilton College House.

A new trash compactor arrived over Thanksgiving break. The old one had broken about a month ago. The delivery of the compactor took longer than expected because a specific type of machine is needed for the building.

The trash compactor should compress the waste deposited in the trash chute by the entire building's residents.

After the new machine arrived, residents were told via e-mail to resume disposing of trash through the trash chute. While the trash compactor was broken, residents were instructed to leave their bags of trash near the elevator. The bags were picked up by the cleaning staff twice a day.

Some residents felt this policy was more effective and convenient than dumping trash down the chute.

College junior Mindy Sprung said that it could be "easier to [simply] drop something [in the hall] than have to open the door [of the trash room] with one hand and hold the trash in the other" but added that essentially there is little difference in convenience.

She and another resident, College junior Amy Shilane, agreed that there is little difference between dropping trash at the elevator and dumping in down the chute.

But they said that the trash chute makes a difference in one way: "The trash doesn't stink up the hall," Shilane said.

Sprung agreed, saying, "It is almost better to leave it in the chute and be done with it."
