Bands clash for glory, charity

Battle of the Bands: Penn vs. Drexel

The Penn-Drexel rivalry will take the stage at World Cafe Live tonight.

The "Rock Does Tobati Good" Battle of the Bands concert will feature dueling bands from Penn and Drexel. All proceeds from the charity event will go toward improving the lives of impoverished citizens in Tobati, Paraguay.

Representing Penn will be the bands Truce for Tonite and Mission Failed.

Truce for Tonite, which calls its genre "emo-punk-rock," played most recently at Alpha Chi Rho's "End of Probation Sensation" party last weekend.

Truce for Tonite guitarist and vocalist Jordan Engelhardt said his band has "made it a goal to do charity events.

"Poverty relief is one of the most worthy charities because it directly affects people's lives," Engelhardt, a College senior, said.

More than 75 percent of Tobati's population is under the age of 19, and 70 percent of its inhabitants live on less than $2 a day. Half of the children in Tobati are already members of the work force.

Truce for Tonite has been together for a year and a half. The band has recorded a demo, and Engelhardt said the group is "looking to record more."

They won their last Battle of the Bands contest, which was organized by the Sigma Kappa sorority.

Drexel's lineup features the band Kilion and Mahlon, along with Skyview.

Skyview will be touring with OAR this January. Kilion and Mahlon plays indie-rock music.

Wharton freshman Jim Farrell, whose Management 100 group helped organize the event, said his team "asked around campus and looked into [what band] gets the best crowds."

Truce for Tonite and Mission Failed are "the two best bands on Penn's campus," he said.

Penn has a history of charitable work in Tobati. Fifteen students traveled there for a program organized by the Fox Leadership Program in 2004, during which they helped build El Centro de Salud, Tobati's public medical clinic, and distributed more than 750 pounds of clothing and toys to Tobati's poor.

The musical melee is co-sponsored by Fox Leadership and Drexel's Center for Civic Engagement and will take place between 11:30 p.m. and 2 a.m. The doors open at 11 p.m.

Tickets are available for $10 on Locust Walk between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. today or for $12 at the door. World Cafe Live is located at 3025 Walnut St.
