A small battery exploded at the Hosptial of the University of Pennsylvania today, injuring two health-care workers.
The injuries have been described as "minor," according to a statement by the University.
The explosion occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. Fire crews were called to HUP at 1:11 p.m. after they were told of an emergency on the 12th floor of the Silverstein Building, which is near 34th and Spruce Streets.
A fire official told The Philadelphia Inquirer that a "suspicious device" was removed from the 12th floor. That device was later confirmed to be the battery.
The situation was declared under control at 1:40 p.m.
"At this time, the Philadelphia Fire Department, the Philadelphia Police and HUP safety officers are conducting a thorough search of the floor and surrounding areas to ensure that no additional batteries or devices are present," read part of the University's statement. "Based on the recommendations from the Fire and Police departments, there are no plans to evacuate any areas within the hospital.
"We will continue to work closely with the Fire and Police departments to ensure the safety of our premises."
