Eight awards honor seniors on Hey Day

University tradition dictates that eight seniors will be honored on Hey Day as the best and the brightest.

Four of the awards are given in recognition of women.

The Althea K. Hottel Award was established in 1959 in honor of the first dean of women, who also earned three Penn degrees.

The Gaylord P. Harnwell Award is given in honor of the former University president and distinguished nuclear physicist.

The David R. Goddard Award honors the prominent Botany professor who served as provost of the University from 1961 to 1970.

The R. Jean Brownlee Award is named in honor of the dean of the College for Women from 1958 to 1975 who also earned three degrees at Penn.

The other four awards are awarded to men.

The Spoon was originally given to the most popular member of the senior class at the first Class Day.

The Bowl was initially presented to a popular sophomore at the end of the Bowl Fight.

The Cane commemorates Cane Fights. The Cane Award was presented to the third most popular senior.

The Spade is awarded in honor of a custom wherein the student who used a spade to plant the class ivy was allowed to keep the tool as an expression of his classmates' esteem.

Senior class members vote on the award. Voting concludes on Sunday.
