News Brief: Grad student robbed at 48th, Pine streets

A 26-year-old school of Arts and Sciences graduate student was robbed Tuesday near the intersection of 48th and Pine streets between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

Police have not made any arrests in connection to the case.

The victim -- who asked not to be named -- was standing at an ATM machine when two males approached him, Penn Police detectives said.

The males demanded that the victim give them his ATM card and password. When he refused, the males beat him until he complied. They proceeded to remove $300 from the victim's account.

"I was in the hospital all day ... and I am doing okay now but I have lacerations all over my face and ... body," said the victim, who suffered bruises to his face, forehead and hip.

Though he was not able to conduct a full interview with police, he provided them with descriptions of his attackers.

One attacker was described as a six-foot-tall black male with a medium build, curly hair and a light complexion. He was wearing a black coat and had a space between his front two teeth.

The other attacker was described as a six-foot-tall black male with dark clothes and a dark complexion.

The victim did not report the incident until Wednesday around noon. Because the incident did not occur within the jurisdiction of Penn Police, Southwest Detectives -- located at 5500 Pine St. -- will investigate the case.

In addition to pursuing his graduate studies, the victim teaches Italian to undergraduate students.

This case marks the fifth robbery of a member of the Penn community this year.
