Police call restaurant robbery an inside job

Mad 4 Mex employee becomes 3rd arrest in Jan. 9 armed robbery

Penn Police arrested a former Mad 4 Mex employee yesterday for his suspected involvement in the armed robbery of the local restaurant.

John Henderson, 25, was the third arrest in the case, according to Penn Police detective Bill Danks. He was detained at approximately 8 a.m. in his West Philadelphia home after a police investigation determined that he helped organize the Jan. 9 robbery and planned to share in the nearly $10,000 that was stolen.

Danks said Henderson was in the restaurant at the time of the robbery and opened a back door for the robbers. During the crime, however, police said Henderson pretended that he did not know the criminals or their plans.

The crime occurred on campus at the restaurant's 3426 Moravian St. location in the late morning.

Two other suspects, Ikeem Mont and Tavon Jordan, both 18 and of North Philadelphia, were kept in custody after a preliminary hearing and will face trial on a date to be determined.

Though Henderson did not physically possess weapons or remove any money from the restaurant, he faces charges for robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, endangering another person, possession of an instrument of crime and criminal conspiracy.

These charges come due to the fact that Pennsylvania law mandates that a criminal charged with conspiracy receive the same charges as all other individuals involved in the case.

Police did not arrest Henderson until they had more information about the crime, Danks said.

"From information we received from the co-defendants and from [Henderson], we believe we have made the right arrests," he said.

Henderson is currently in police custody. Danks said that the district attorney will likely post bail for him and determine a preliminary court date in the coming days.

At this point, police do not plan to make any further arrests in this case.

At the preliminary hearing for Mont and Jordan last week, Mad 4 Mex manager Darby Hoffman said that the two men pointed a gun at him and he heard a clicking sound, after which they demanded the money from the safe.
