Guns present in 2 robberies over weekend

No arrests follow armed robberies, thefts near campus

Four robberies or attempted robberies on campus occured on or near campus over the weekend, two of them involving guns, according to police reports.

At 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, a male unaffiliated with the University was approached by two females on the 4000 block of Sansom Street.

The two females reportedly demanded that he give them his cell phone. When he refused, they shoved him up against a fence.

According to Penn Police, one of the robbers then produced a small, silver handgun and threatened the man. After he handed over his cell phone, the two robbers fled north on 40th Street.

One of the robbers was described as being a black woman 18 to 21 years old, 5 feet, 3 inches tall, and of thin build and light complexion, and was wearing a sky blue hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.

The other robber was described as being a black woman 18 to 21 years old, 5 feet, 3 inches tall, black and of thin build and dark complexion, and was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and black jacket.

In a separate incident involving a gun, a male unaffiliated with the University was approached by another male in the parking lot between the telephone company and restaurants on the 4000 block of Chestnut Street at approximately 4:11 a.m. Saturday.

The robber proceeded to point a small, silver handgun at the other man.

The robber took $21 from the male and fled east on Chestnut Street and then north on 40th Street.

Finally, in two related events on Friday night, a pair of females attempted to rob two students but were unsuccessful in both attempts.

At 8:05 p.m., the two robbers approached a female student on the 3900 block of Spruce Street and demanded that she hand over all of her money.

The student replied that she did not have any money, after which one of the robbers reportedly punched her in the face. They then fled east on Spruce Street.

The student sustained minor injuries to the left side of her face. She did not require hospitalization.

Approximately 15 minutes later, the same two robbers approached a female student on the 3700 block of Locust Walk and demanded that the student give them her cell phone.

When the student refused to hand the phone over, one of the robbers attempted to pull the student's purse off of her shoulder. When this proved unsuccessful, the robber struck the student on the back of the her head.

The two robbers then fled east on Locust Walk.

The student did not sustain any injuries.

One of the robbers was described as being 15 to 20 years old, 5 feet, 4 inches tall, black and of medium build, with pulled-back, straight black hair and wearing a red tank top.

The second robber was described as being 15 to 20 years old, 5 feet, 7 inches tall and black, with chin-length black hair.

Additionally, there have also been two recent thefts on campus that were similar in nature to the robberies. Because no force was used in either of these incidents, they are considered to be thefts as opposed to robberies.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, a male University staff member reported that he was approached by four juvenile black males, one of whom snatched his cell phone and fled.

The cell phone, valued at $100, was later recovered by Penn Police.

On Nov. 17, a female student reported that, while she was waiting in line to pay for coffee at the Wawa located at 3604 Chestnut St., a male came from behind her and stole her wallet, which contained $500 cash, in addition to the money in her hand.

He fled on foot and was lost on 40th Street.
