The sounds of the Terror Squad's Lean Back, featuring Fat Joe, could be heard down Locust Walk last night as the Bicultural InterGreek Council gathered for its first annual Greek Showcase in Wynn Commons.
The show, which was part of this year's Greek Week, gave chapters from the BIG-C the opportunity to showcase their talents for approximately 100 students.
"There are no rules, it's your show," said BIG-C Vice President and College senior Cecilia Ramirez, who emceed the event.
The evening's performances included steps, traditional songs and strolls from five of the council's chapters.
Larry Moses, program coordinator for the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, highlighted the fact that step performances and showcases are an integral part of the BIG-C's history and tradition.
BIG-C members said they viewed the event as an opportunity to show the Penn community what the BIG-C is all about.
Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity member and College senior Kiel Berry said that the night was "mostly about representation" and showing Penn that the BIG-C is "here to stay."
The show did not only attract members of the BIG-C, but also Greeks from the Panhellenic and InterFraternity councils, as well as some BIG-C alumni.
Phi Sigma Sigma sorority President and Engineering junior Bahar Adeli was among those in attendance. Adeli, whose sorority is part of the Panhellenic Council, stressed the fact that it was important to "support the entire Greek community."
BIG-C members said they appreciated the attendance of the two other Greek umbrella organizations.
BIG-C President and College senior Enny Peguero said that the highlight of her evening was seeing "Panhel, IFC and the BIG-C at one event."
Moses stressed the fact that the joint participation was unprecedented and showed that "we are all Greeks, we are all one family."
One of the evening's highlights was College junior Melissa Providence, a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority.
Providence performed a mini-showcase which included a rendition of one of her chapter's traditional songs and a reinterpretation of Alicia Keys' hit If I Ain't Got You, in which Providence sang, "But everything means nothing, if I ain't got you, Zeta."
"Melissa is always phenomenal," Ramirez said.
The showcase was one of two major performances that the BIG-C plans to hold this year.
The BIG-C is comprised of 11 fraternities and sororities and has a membership recruitment process separate from the InterFraternity Council and Panhellenic Council.
