Zoller wins Ivy League Rookie of the Week

For the second time this season, freshman Mark Zoller has been named Ivy League Rookie of the Week.

The forward scored a career-high 24 points Friday night against Brown, while grabbing nine rebounds.

The following night against Yale, he had a team-high 12 points and eight boards, eight of which came in the last seven minutes of the game.

The Blue Bell, Pa., native leads the Ancient Eight in field-goal percentage, making 62.8 percent of his shots. He is also ranked third in the Ivies in offensive rebounds, averaging 2.44 per matchup.

Zoller is averaging 12.7 points per Ivy League game and 8.7 points per game on the season.

But even more shocking to Penn fans than Zoller's career numbers was his new hair style -- he got rid of his notorious afro.

The forward said that his choice to trim his locks before the Yale game stemmed from the team's disappointing defeat to Brown.

"After the loss on Friday I just decided it was time for a change of pace," Zoller said.

He said that he had been thinking of cutting his hair for a while, as it was often getting in his eyes.

The freshman allowed his teammates to do the honors, citing junior guard Tim Begley as the "main barber."

Zoller said that he has received mixed reviews on his new coif.

"A lot of people don't even recognize me," he said.

Nine Quakers fencers named to All-Ivy squad

An Ivy League championship wasn't the only Ancient Eight accolade the Penn women's fencing team received this week.

Six members of the Penn squad -- all freshmen and sophomores -- also received All-Ivy honors yesterday. All-Ivy status is determined by the record of fencers in Ancient Eight bouts.

Freshman epee Holly Buechel had the league's best record at her weapon. The South Orange, N.J., native went 13-2 at epee this season.

Fellow freshman Annika Eiremo had the Ivy League's second-best sabre record, going 14-1.

Penn women to make second-team All-Ivy were epee Livia Rurarz-Huygens,foil Christina Kaneshige and sabres Katelyn Sherry and Cassandra Frey.

One member of the men's team, senior Andy Radu, received first-team All-Ivy honors. The Great Neck, N.Y., native had the league's best foil record, 10-2.

Freshman foil Michael Galligan and sophomore sabre Mark Kindrachuk were named second-team All-Ivy.
