A SEPTA trolley crashed into a house at the corner of 42nd and Spruce streets at approximately 3:03 a.m.
The number 13 train was heading westbound on Spruce Street and derailed while making a left turn onto 42nd Street, crashing into the corner of the 4200 Spruce Street house.
The trolley skidded onto the sidewalk and hit a light post before slamming into the house.
Approximately four passengers were on board the trolley, in addition to the driver.
"The trolley just went crazy, I heard a whole lot of screeching," said trolley passenger Kevin Swain. "I thought I was gonna die."
Philadelphia and Penn Police, fire units and SEPTA Police arrived on the scene within minutes of the crash.
All passengers were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for complaints of pain, according to police and witnesses at the scene. There were no life-threatening injuries.
"Can you imagine this at 10 a.m?" said Lt. A.J. Mirabella of the 18th District, adding "We're very lucky."
Mirabella estimated that the train would be removed by lunchtime today. He did not know how fast the trolley was going when it crashed.
The driver was put on a stretcher with a neck brace and was limping, according to witnesses.
David Johnson of Apartment 101 of 4200 Spruce -- the site of the impact -- was startled by the crash while taking a shower.
"It hit where my bed is," he said. "It looks like an earthquake happened."
Johnson added that the trolley went through the wall, pushing in the window, buckling the wall and throwing his dresser several feet.
Several Penn students exited their nearby homes and called police after hearing a loud crash.
"Really, a trolley just hit my house," said Wharton senior Tara Einis, who lives in apartment 206, which is directly above the site of impact. The building is owned by Campus Apartments.
The number 42 bus, which was headed westbound on Spruce Street, was forced to stop at the intersection. The bus' driver then proceeded to aid the injured driver of the trolley.
