Crime rate over summer `average'

However, the number of robberies reported was up from last year.

Though several robberies, burglaries and assaults disrupted campus calm over the past three months, Penn saw typical summer crime rates this year, according to Penn Police.

"It was a pretty average summer," Deputy Chief of Investigations William Danks said.

Although there were no surprising figures in this summer's crime statistics, some incidents, including bicycle thefts and robberies, did increase compared to last year's figures.

However, despite these increases, Danks said the police department was successful in making arrests in many of the summer's crimes.

"We had an upsurge in robberies, but made arrests in almost all of them," Danks said.

"We caught a lot and locked up a lot," he added.

Among those crimes that resulted in arrests was an attempted robbery at 3400 Moravian Street.

On August 20 at 11:15 p.m., four juveniles attempted to take a backpack from a female affiliated with the University.

Two juveniles were also arrested for a robbery at 300 S. 42nd Street. The juveniles allegedly punched a man unaffiliated with the University, and took his cell phone before being apprehended by the police.

In another robbery on Aug. 26, a man unaffiliated with the University was robbed at gunpoint at 41st and Sansom streets. The assailant demanded the man's wallet, but finding that it contained no money, threw the wallet on the ground and fled the scene. No arrest was made in this case.

On Aug. 5 at 10:16 p.m., a male affiliated with the University was also robbed at gunpoint. The robbery took place at 4400 Pine Street. Twenty dollars was taken from the complainant.

In total, 13 robberies have occurred since the end of May.

On Aug. 26 at 1:30 am, a female, unaffiliated with the University, was assaulted by a male she knew. The incident occurred at the Free Library of Philadelphia at 3927 Walnut Street. The complainant was knocked to the ground and received minor cuts.

In another assault case, on Aug. 6 at 8:57 p.m., Narval Coleman was arrested for assault after striking an officer. The officer had been arresting Coleman for disorderly conduct at the 3900 block of Walnut Street, and Coleman was subsequently arrested for disorderly conduct and assault on police.

Additionally, 17 burglaries took place over the summer months.

On Aug. 8, two male University students reported a burglary at 4000 Baltimore. There was forced entry and $1,500 in electronics, including cameras and stereo equipment were taken from their apartment.

In a similar case on Aug. 27, a male affiliated with the University reported a burglary at 4039 Baltimore Avenue. After a forced entry, $1,500 in stereo components and cameras were taken from his apartment.

The number of assaults was comparable with last year. Three occurred in August, in contrast with two that took place last year during that month.
