Two U. students robbed on Pine

The students were reportedly robbed at gunpoint yesterday.

Two male University students were reportedly robbed at gunpoint early yesterday morning while walking near 41st and Pine streets.

The two students were walking east on Pine Street between 1 and 2 a.m. when, one of them said, two young men walked up behind them.

"We thought it was a little strange because it was so hot last night, and they were wearing heavy black sweaters and sweatshirts," said the student.

One of the two men then allegedly pulled a gun on the students -- a small-caliber revolver, the student said -- and demanded that they turn over their belongings.

"My friend was hesitant at first and was trying to remove his PennCard from his wallet, but the guy with the gun said 'now'," the student said.

The suspects took a wallet containing assorted identification cards and $10 from the first victim and a wallet containing $6 from the second victim before fleeing the scene.

The two men then reportedly headed west on Pine from 41st Street.

The students described the suspects to police as two black males. The first was in his late teens, 5 feet 10 inches tall and 180 pounds. The second was also in his teens, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 150 pounds. He was wearing dark clothing.

The most recent armed robbery to occur on campus took place in February, when Frank Taylor was arrested for robbing CVS Pharmacy, located at 3915 Walnut Street.

Taylor was later linked to two other incidents, including a robbery at the Alpha Chi Omega sorority house, located at 3906 Spruce Street, last fall.

Last November, however, two similar incidents occurred in the same area as yesterday's robbery. The two incidents happened within four days of one another.

In both cases the victims, one a University student, were walking alone and were approached by a suspect wielding a gun. While both incidents involved similar descriptions of a suspect, police were unable to identify a suspect in either case.

Last April, a gun-wielding man also robbed the WaWa Food Market at 37th and Spruce streets.

WaWa employees reported that a man entered the store at around 4 a.m, purchased a cup of coffee and then pulled a nine-millimeter gun on the cashier. No shots were fired, but the assailant forced the cashier to open the safe and escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.
