Just by looking at Shivnanda's unassuming facade, you probably wouldn't expect that an overwhelming wealth of savory, exotic delights lies within.
But that's exactly what you'll find when you step through the doors of -- and even with the typical college student's tight budget, you can enjoy an Indian feast fit for a rajah.
From the trickling fountain in the waiting area to the bejeweled artwork on the walls, Shivnanda has a pleasant and traditional ambiance.
We started off our meal with vegetable samosas ($2.75), which were two hearty pastries filled with spiced potatoes and peas, as well as Musulini Naan ($2.95), consisting of four triangles of soft, warm flat bread filled with gooey, garlicky cheese.
After finishing our appetizers, we ordered Musulini Kebab ($14.95) and Chicken Tikka Masala ($13.95). The lamb kebab arrived sizzling, and was grilled with vegetables and supplemented with a plate of perfectly cooked basmati rice. The chicken dish -- our personal favorite -- comes in tender chunks marinated in yogurt and served in a creamy tomato-based sauce.
Deciding on just two entrees proved itself a difficult task -- Shivnanda also offers an array of seafood selections, Tandoori dishes, Thali meals, curry specialties and nearly a dozen vegetarian options.
Because of its huge menu and casual atmosphere, Shivnanda feels as welcoming to families as it does to couples and groups of friends. The restaurant is furnished with booths and even high chairs if necessary, and when your picky little sister comes to visit, she can order the chicken fingers and french fries off the children's menu.
After the entrees, my jeans were feeling a little tight around the waist, but my friend and I splurged nevertheless and ordered Kneer ($2.50), which is a rice pudding with raisins, and Gulabjmun ($2.50), moist pastry balls soaked in syrup which I strongly recommend to those with an intense sweet tooth.
So for less than $50, we were stuffed and equipped with a doggy bag.
The restaurant's menu is so vast -- and almost unnavigable -- that you can't possibly experience enough of it in just one visit. But Shivnanda's mouth-watering treats and reasonable prices will most likely lure you back for a second taste.
