At Penn State's Rec Hall last Friday, the supposedly overmatched Penn volleyball team put up a valiant effort against No. 8 seed UCLA before falling 3-0, to the Bruins in the Quakers first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Quakers were narrowly defeated in each game, falling 30-26, 28-25 and 30-25, respectively. In the first two games, the Red and Blue (18-7) stormed back from huge deficits early on to close within 28-26 and 28-25, respectively, of UCLA (20-8). "I think we scared them," Penn senior middle hitter Kelly Szczerba said. "We were seriously underestimated, and it took them a little while to realize that we weren't going to let them roll right over us."
