Culture: Quick Fix Picnic

Take-out for the other end of campus

Picnic, a new catering and takeout shop on Walnut Street, is a trendier option for quick convenient meals than the Freshgrocer, especially for those living in Center City or Hill House. Picnic features foods like organic granola for breakfast, tomato artichoke soup for lunch and pine-nut crusted salmon for dinner. At Picnic, the prices are comparable to those at the FroGro or Houston Hall--$5.50 for a Caesar salad with grilled chicken, or $6.50 for a roast beef on a kaiser roll. I don't have to convince you about takeout; as college students we have serious limits on our ability to obtain food. (Express lunch just isn't a viable option after freshman year.) Look at how the Fresh-G caters to this need: a third of it is devoted to pre-prepared foods like pizza, sushi and mac 'n' cheese, which students can take home and eat in comfort. Without a family to feed us, we must scavenge on our own to find nourishment. Added to this stressor is limited money with which to buy food and even more limited time in which to prepare it. These factors have lead to the popularity of takeout food, and places like Picnic cater to Penn students' delicate tastes and busy schedules.
