M. Hoops' first three opponents revealed

The Penn men's basketball team will face NCAA Tournament teams in its first three games of the season.

The Las Vegas Invitational schedule was released yesterday, and the Quakers will be facing Georgia Tech, Illinois and Eastern Illinois, in succession.

Penn opens its season at Georgia Tech (17-13) on Nov. 19 in the first round of the Invitational.

The Quakers then fly to Las Vegas for a trio of games at Valley High School on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22-24.

Penn faces Illinois (27-8) at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 22. The Fighting Illini return star guards Frank Williams and Cory Bradford from a team that made the Sweet 16 a year ago.

The last time the Quakers faced Illinois was in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament. Penn lost that game, 68-58.

Penn's third game of the season will be against 2001 Ohio Valley Conference champions Eastern Illinois (21-10 last year) at 5 p.m. on Nov. 23. The Panthers fell to Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year.

The Quakers will play their fourth game on Saturday against one of the four teams in the other bracket (Iowa State, Saint Louis, Hartford or Southern Illinois).

Those parings will be based on the results of the first three games played. The two first-place teams, and second-place teams, and third- and- fourth-place teams will play each other.

M. Soccer moves up, Chamowitz honored

The Penn men's soccer team, led by senior Sam Chamovitz, moved up to No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings yesterday.

The Quakers, who broke through with a No. 9 ranking last week, won both their games last week to leapfrog Drexel and Farleigh Dickinson in the rankings.

Chamowitz, meanwhile, was named Philadelphia Soccer Seven Player of the Week for the period ending on Sunday.

He scored a goal in Soccer Seven victories over Temple and Drexel last week to give him a total of four goals in six games this season.

Penn is now 2-0-1 in Philadelphia Soccer Seven play. In the scoring system (three points for a win, one for a tie), the Quakers' seven points trail only the 3-1 Dragons -- who have nine points despite dropping a 2-1 decision to Penn on Sunday.
