After its seventh-place finish at the Temple Invitational two weeks ago, the Penn men's golf team returned to action last weekend to place second at the ninth-annual Stabler Invitational at Lehigh University.

Host Lehigh claimed bragging rights for the weekend by shooting a 585. Penn, Princeton, St. Bonaventure's and Temple all tied for second with scores of 595.

"Second is certainly not bad considering there were 20 teams there," Penn junior Chad Perman said. "But we were hoping to win for team confidence."

On the individual front, Lehigh's Bowen Osborn claimed the title by shooting a five-under 139. Penn senior Mike Russell tied for fourth after shooting a one-over-par 145.

"I played very well," Russell said. "I was pleased with my performance, especially the second day when I battled back after early setbacks and was able to put together a solid score."

Russell was followed by Perman, who finished sixth overall, and juniors Peyton Wallace (14th), Endel Liias (37th) and Trey Best (59th). Only a team's top four scores of the day are computed into the overall standings.

"There were good things that came out of this tournament, like our low scores," Perman said. "But we've come to expect at least what we've shot."

"We rebounded and played better after last week's setback at Temple," Russell said. "Hopefully we can just continue to improve."

The Red and Blue have two weeks to hone their skills before traveling to the Georgetown Invitational, the team's last stop of the fall season.
