Eckerd store to close According to Eckerd Corporation spokeswoman Tami Alderman, the Walnut Street store, now draped with closing signs, had been "underperforming financially.". She added that the company will move prescription files to the Eckerd store on Frankford Avenue after notifying customers. CVS, located at 3923 Walnut Street, has been filling former Eckerd customers' prescriptions since the middle of March, according to CVS pharmacist Larry Gross. JCPenney, which owns Eckerd, will close a total of 289 underperforming Eckerd drugstores, according to the online 1999 JCPenney Annual Report. "Eckerd will work with local real estate developers to find suitable tenants to sublease available space after closings are complete," the report also notes. Although John Greenwood, a top official at the University's real estate company, would not confirm the store's closing, he said in early March that he viewed the possible vacancy as an opportunity. The University will have a "fair amount" of control in the transition, he said. -- Aliya Sternstein
