Minority Faculty at Penn: The Numbers_____________

The University has seen a net increase of just five underrepresented minority professors within its four undergraduate schools. The number of African-American professors has gone from 19 to 20, while there are now 17 Latinos, compared to 13 in 1996. The one additional African-American professor joined the School of Arts and Sciences, which now has 13 black faculty members. The other undergraduate schools have remained stagnant -- the Nursing School and the Engineering School have two African-American professors and there are three in the Wharton School. The number of Latino faculty has shown a slightly bigger increase. SAS has increased from nine to 10. Nursing, which previously had no Latino faculty, hired one. Engineering increased from three to five, and Wharton stayed the same with one Latino faculty member. Currently, SAS has 431 standing faculty members, while Wharton has 186, Engineering 97 and Nursing 48.
