Into thin airInto thin airTo the Editor: The difficulty on popular mountains like the Grand is that some "climbing tourists" take unnecessary risks or come unprepared. Always, the big unknown is the weather that on the Grand can turn a summery walkup into a nightmare. Speaking as one who has experienced (and summited) that mountain, I can testify to the difference. It's unfortunate that Exum's summit experience was described as "taming" the mountain. Experienced climbers who understand the risks and rewards are grateful when the mountain "allows" a return visit and are unlikely to assert "mastery" over it. Joseph McGowan Department of Radiology
