The victim, who is not believed to be affiliated with Penn, was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at around 3 a.m. A HUP spokeswoman said the man was in fair condition as of around 4 a.m. this morning. The gunshots came shortly after the club closed at 2 a.m. A "disorderly crowd" of exiting patrons had assembled outside its 38th Street entrance at around that time, according to Philadelphia police. According to a witness who declined to give his name, the victim was shot while standing between two cars parked in front of the club. He said the incident followed some sort of melee between unidentified patrons. It was unclear whether the victim had been part of the brawl. Both Penn and Philadelphia police -- several dozen police cars in total -- responded to the scene and blocked off less than a block of 38th Street. -- Jonathan Margulies
