Diversity on campusDiversity on campusTo the Editor: However, Callahan's characterization of the creation of a proposed Asian cultural resource center, the opening of La Casa Latina and Unity Week as "self-segregating activit[ies]" is both ill informed and incorrect. While Callahan implies that these programs are not intended to promote interaction between students of different backgrounds, this week's events are organized and sponsored by such groups as the Undergraduate Assembly, Career Services, the Women's Studies Department, Hillel, the South Asian Regional Studies Department, Acela and Connaissance. The incredible enthusiasm which these groups have lent while collaborating for this week of unity is hardly an act of "self-segregation." While it is interesting and fortunate that Chord on Blues has such diverse membership, what need is there to put down those organizations who actively seek to support cultures and ethnicities? Integration cannot be achieved overnight. By stepping outside our ethnic comfort zones, we are able to chip away at the racial barriers which were built into American history from its inception. We are seeking to create a campus that is truly unified, not "separate but equal." Sometimes this mammoth endeavor takes more than just chance -- it takes strength, compassion and a dedicated effort. This week is for you -- in celebration of and no matter what race you may be. Everyone is welcome. If Wise wants exposure to war, he should read a book by someone who lived through one, rent a documentary or watch the news. Getting information about war from Oliver Stone is the same as learning Western Civilization from Bill and Ted. Brian Uher Graduate Student BGS
