LETTERS: Reality of security cameras

To the Editor: It was reported that "the Division of Public Safety has installed eight closed circuit video cameras on major street corners." The article goes on to list the locations where the cameras are installed and to state that the cameras are all being tested. In fact, the only camera which is being tested is the one and only camera that has been installed so far in the first phase of CCTV implementation -- the camera at 40th and Locust streets. The remaining cameras for the locations mentioned in the article will be installed in the near future. Another important fact is that the cameras will not be monitored by "trained security personnel." Rather, Telecommunications (at 4040 Chestnut Street) will monitor them, with 24-hour oversight by Penn Police supervisors. Stratis Skoufalos Director of Security Services "LOVE" on campus To the Editor: The University of Pennsylvania is delighted to have the newly installed sculpture "LOVE" by Robert Indiana in its art collection. The well known image was first exhibited by Indiana as a painting in 1966. Since then, "LOVE" has been translated into diverse mediums and the original spiritual significance of love has evolved into a symbol of the sixties. Indiana expresses himself as a painter of signs. He reduces the expression of his subject to a word. The University is pleased that "LOVE" has received campus-wide attention and comments pro and con. It is gratifying to have the University's artwork not only contribute to our cultural environment but also to stimulate thoughtful and analytical debate.
