Bicyclist, car collide at 40th and Spruce The man on the bike, who was unidentified at the time of the accident, was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to undergo immediate surgery, according to Penn Police Sergeant Peg O'Malley. The accident occurred at about 6 p.m. The driver and passenger of the car, both in their 20s, are unaffiliated with the University. While the accident is still under investigation by the Philadelphia Accident Investigations Department, the occupants of the car were not charged with any crime. The driver of the car said at the time that the biker, who he estimated to be in his early 20s, "came out of nowhere" while the two men were driving within the speed limit through a green light. Further information about the current status of the biker or the investigation was not available this week. -- Karlene Hanko Lauren Bessette was Wharton alumna The Wharton School's Office of Public Affairs confirmed early this week that Lauren Bessette, the sister-in-law of John F. Kennedy Jr., received her master's degree in business administration from Wharton in 1991. Bessette, 34, whose sister Carolyn was Kennedy's wife, was one of three passengers in the one-engine plane driven by Kennedy that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean late Friday night. It dropped from radar 16 and a half miles from Martha's Vineyard Airport. Kennedy was planning on dropping Lauren Bessette off in Martha's Vineyard and then continuing on to Hyannis Port for the wedding of his cousin, Rory. Bessette's body was recovered, along with those of the other two passengers, Wednesday morning 116 feet below the surface in the fuselage of the plane. Few other details about Bessette's Penn career are yet known. She arrived at the University in 1989 and received her degree two years later. -- Eric Tucker
