The Penn men's golf team is set to open its spring season this weekend as the Quakers travel to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Invitational. Competing in what will be the strongest field of Penn's three-tournament spring schedule, the Quakers hope to prepare to defend their Ivy title the following weekend at Bethpage State Park. Played on the William Flynn-designed Navy course, Penn will compete against all of the top 10 teams in the NCAA District II; the Quakers are currently the 10th-ranked team in the district. "This is a great golf course, it is the best field we will compete in this spring," senior captain Brian Owens said. "The greens are lightning fast and it is a great, traditional William Flynn design." Competing for Penn along with Owens will be junior Rob Goldfaden, and sophomores Kyle Moran, Todd Golditch and Kieran Doherty. "Rob, Kyle and Brian have all played at Navy before. There should be no surprises for them," Penn coach Francis Vaughn said. The tournament should prove an excellent test for Penn, which needs the tune-up before competing for the Ivy Championship next weekend. "There is no reason why we should not do well -- it will be a wonderful tune up course and field for the Ivy defense we are hoping to make next week," Moran said. Owens agreed with Moran. "It will be a great start to the season," Owens said, "it will give us more confidence to defend our title."
