Temple loses again

The Associated Press What's wrong with the Temple Owls? John Chaney nearly took all night to tell the whole story. Sean Mason scored 14 points and Wisconsin made 13 3-pointers to hand No. 16 Temple its fourth straight loss, 63-56 last night. The Owls (4-4) lost four in a row for the first time since the 1992-93 season and only the third time in Chaney's 17 seasons. The Owls lost five straight and finished 14-15 in 1982-83, Chaney's first season. Chaney made reporters wait about 20 minutes after the game and closed the Owls locker room. ''We've lost our way,'' Chaney said. ''The guards beat us tonight -- not the other guards, our guards. We got beat through our own lack of effort. They were absolutely horrible.'' Ty Calderwood had 13 points for the Badgers (8-1). His stifling defense frustrated point guard Pepe Sanchez and held 6'10" forward Lamont Barnes to three points and one rebound. Mason and Calderwood each made four three-pointers as Wisconsin shot 13-for-21 from beyond the arc. ''It was a big win for us,'' Calderwood said. ''I'm not that surprised. I came in here expecting to win. I'm 2-0 against these guys. I told the guys from this day on, I'm shooting.'' Mark Karcher led Temple with 18 points, with all but one coming in the second half. It was Wisconsin's 10th victory over a ranked opponent since coach Dick Bennett took over the program. ''This is finally my team,'' said Bennett, in his fourth season. ''Last year, the kids really held together even though we were losing, and that really told me something. It's showing this year.'' Chaney launched into a lengthy monologue afterward, and he was still talking more than an hour after the game ended. He touched on topics such as the Owls' deceptive preseason ranking, poor guard play, even Minnesota Vikings quarterback Randall Cunningham. ''We're not that good, and we shouldn't be in the Top 20,'' Chaney said. ''I told you that and nobody would listen to me.'' Temple cut it to 58-56 when Karcher stole the ball on an inbounds play and made an uncontested layup with 65 seconds left. But Barnes committed his fifth foul, leading to a free throw by Mark Vershaw to make it 59-56. Karcher missed a three-pointer, and Temple's Keaton Sanders got the loose ball but had it stolen by Calderwood, who made another foul shot making it 60-56 with 31.2 seconds left. Mike Kelley, who leads the Badgers in steals, stole the ball in front of Chaney near the Temple bench, and Andy Kowske finished off the Owls with a dunk that made it 62-56 with 17.7 seconds remaining. ''They'd been running that play all game, and I knew what was coming,'' said Kelley, who had nine points. ''I just knocked it away. It was a really big play.'' When the Badgers kept pouring in three-pointers, Chaney switched from his traditional matchup zone to man-to-man defense -- and lamented the move. ''You guys are talking about Chaney playing the zone,'' Chaney said. ''Well, we're playing man-for-man. We've been doing your wishes. And guess what? We're getting our ass kicked. Maybe I've been falling prey to you guys. ''I'm going back to a little bit more matchup, and see if we can win a game from now on.'' Somehow, Chaney turned that into a speech about Cunningham, the former Eagles quarterback now starring in Minnesota.
