SPORTS BRIEF: Friday, December 4, 1998

M. Squash hits the road for Ivy League matches On Sunday, the Quakers travel to Yale, and on Monday they head to Rhode Island to take on Brown. The Red and Blue head into this this week's matches confident after two great wins last weekend. They easily disposed of Cornell (0-1) and pulled out a surprise victory from Denison (1-1), last year's No. 8 ranked team. "We destroyed Cornell by a pretty good margin, 9-0, and every match was 3-0. We beat them a lot worse than we expected," sophomore Will Ruthrauff said. "Denison, on the other hand, was intense. We were tied 4-4, and it all came down to the last match, fifth game. It was great to pull it out in the end." While last weekend's two victories were a morale booster, this weekend should be a real test of the strength for this year's Quakers team. Last year, the Quakers suffered a tough defeat at the hands of Yale, losing by a 7-2 margin. A strong showing this Saturday would prove both to the Quakers and to opposing teams just how much the Red and Blue has improved over the past year. "Yale is a tough team mainly because of their depth. So many of their players could be anywhere in the lineup," sophomore Jamie White said. "Our top few players really have to pull some matches out and hopefully we'll get a couple more in the middle and towards the end of the lineup." After Sunday's tough meeting with Yale (0-0), the Quakers head to Brown (0-1). If last year's matches are any indication, it should be an easy victory. "Last year we beat Brown 9-0. This year we are a much better team and I think we are going to destroy them," White said. -- Jessica Tuchinsky
