The Daily Pennsylvanian

SPORTS BRIEF: Monday, October 12, 1998

Field Hockey falls to Tribe in Williamsburg Radcliffe, a senior from Houston, Texas, was a one-woman Quakers wrecking crew, stickhandling the ball for most of the afternoon. She took nine shots on goal, five more than the entire Penn team. Then, just over 25 minutes into the first half and with the Penn defense keying on Radcliffe, Powley fired a Jess Jiao feed past Penn senior goaltender Sarah Dunn, thrusting the Tribe ahead 2-0. The goal proved to be the game winner, as William and Mary (7-6) held on to beat the Quakers 2-1 yesterday at Busch Field. The victory marked the only time in Powley's career that William and Mary won its annual game against Penn (3-6). The past three seasons, the Quakers offense has been strong as the Quakers won in close contests. Yesterday, however, things were different from the get-go as the Tribe first got on the scoreboard just three minutes into the game, when William and Mary midfielder Kate Uhran fired a rebound past Dunn. Powley's goal, which proved to be all the offense the Tribe would need, came with 9:20 left in the first half and made the score 2-0. The Quakers' only score came with just 19 seconds left in the game, when sophomore Bess Freedlander fired her fourth goal of the season past William and Mary goaltender Erika Vargas. Freedlander's shot was the only time the Quakers directed the ball toward the goal in the entire second half as the Tribe outshot Penn 9-1 after the break and 23-4 overall. Dunn saved 12 shots to Tribe goaltender Erika Vargas' two and for the third straight game suffered the loss despite a better save percentage than the opposing goalie. -- Marc Edelman
