CAMPUS BRIEFS: Friday, September 4, 1998

Junior killed in Calif. car accident in June Many details about the accident remain unknown, but none of the other passengers in Roberts' car were injured when it flipped over, according to Panhellenic Council President Janelle Brodsky. Roberts was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Brodsky, a College and Engineering senior and a Pi Beta Phi sister, emphasized that alcohol was not involved in the incident. "Emily just happened to be the only one not wearing a seatbelt," she said. Office of Fraternity and Sorority affairs Director Scott Reikofski said at the time that he was "still trying to piece things together." Roberts, a native of Newhall, Calif., was well liked by everyone that knew her, according to Panhel Secretary Michelle Fliman, a College senior. "As I told one of her sorority sisters last week, Emily sticks out in my mind as one of the sweetest and friendliest girls of her year," Fliman, an Alpha Chi Omega sister, said at the time. "She was truly a genuine, beautiful individual." Funeral services were held in California. --Ginny Dorsey 'Depressed' student commits suicide Family and friends mourned the loss of Shalini Narwani, a bright, soft-spoken woman bound for the international arena, after her suicide earlier this summer. Narwani, a College and Wharton senior in the Huntsman Program in International Business, shot herself in the chest June 8 in her Center City apartment. She was 21. Narwani left a note that "stated she was depressed," Philadelphia Police Detective Sean Brennan said at the time. He declined to make any further comment on the exact contents of the note. Although friends and professors said they were shocked by Narwani's suicide, several said the student had seemed severely depressed after returning from studying abroad in India last fall. Those who knew her described Narwani as a studious, sweet and articulate woman destined for a successful career in the corporate world. Narwani took a leave of absence from the University last spring and had been living with her sister downtown. The Huntsman Program will hold a memorial service for Narwani in the fall. The date has not yet been scheduled. -- Margie Fishman
