Despite its small size, however, Lang's Nursing School is one of the most prestigious centers for nursing education and research in the United States. The school received more National Institutes of Health funds than any other nursing school last year. Lang is renowned throughout the nursing field for her doctoral thesis, "A Model for Quality Assurance," which has served as a model for nursing care around the world since the 1970s. Recognized for her dedication to all facets of nursing education, including teaching, clinical work and research, Lang is also involved in policy-making decisions throughout the field. In the past, Lang has served as a consultant for the Clinton administration on health care reform issues. Lang also serves on the National Advisory Committee for Health and Human Services Agency for Health Care and Policy Research and received the American Nurses Association Distinguished Membership Award in 1992. Additionally, she is on the Board of Directors of the Franklin Institute, a hands-on science center and museum in Philadelphia. Before coming to Penn in 1992, Land served as dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Lang received her Ph.D. and Master's degrees from Marquette University in Marquette, Wis., and her Bachelor's from Alverno College in Milwaukee.
