We're grateful for the top-notch speakers Penn attracted to speak at graduation ceremonies. Penn succeeded in attracting top-caliber speakers to the University for graduation weekend, ending on a high note a year full of exciting visits. Noted statesman and former President Jimmy Carter's Commencement speech was not only well done but touched on meaningful topics for young adults about to seek out their own paths. And though Carter's visit to West Philadelphia drew the most attention, other speakers were certainly noteworthy in their own right. In addition, Penn brought back former Interim University President Claire Fagin for the Nursing School graduation and businessperson Robert Goergen as the Wharton graduate school's speaker. The honor degree recipients were as diverse as they were qualified. Carter, Prusiner and Collins joined Federal Reserve Chairperson Alan Greenspan, who received especially loud cheers from the Wharton contingent in the crowd; opera soprano Jessye Norman; Judge Arlin Adams and Frank Moore Cross, the top scholar of the Dead Sea Scrolls, among others, in receiving Penn honors. All in all, a great turnout for the weekend should give Penn's newest batch of alumni a graduation to long remember. We can only hope that this trend continues into the upcoming year and beyond.
