EDITORIAL: Many questions, zero answers

Community House residents deserve an explanation for changes going on in their dormitory. Students and staff in the Quadrangle's Community House are rightfully upset that their queries about upcoming changes to the dorm are being met with vague, non-committal responses from housing officials. It's not apparent exactly why four-year Community House Assistant Dean for Residence Diana Koros will not be allowed to return as a house dean in the fall. Many current and former house residents and staff have come forward in strong support of Koros, citing her as an integral force behind the house's current programming. Throwing out someone so popular does not seem to make sense. Koros is also highly qualified academically, as a doctoral candidate with extensive teaching and advising experience. At the same time, other house dean applicants passed through the first round of the selection process with only a bachelor's degree. The only plausible explanation suggested thus far for Koros' elimination from the candidate pool is that she was opposed to some aspects of the new residential plan. But departure from the party line does not seem sufficient reason for dismissal. We understand that issues surrounding hiring practices are confidential. But Community House residents and staff deserve better answers as to why the house's future has been removed from their control. If housing officials want cookie-cutter type residences under the new college house plan, they're on the right track. But if they're committed to their promise of allowing each of the 12 houses to develop its unique personality according to the interests of its residents, there needs to be a change of direction.
