34th Street's new editor-in-chief hasn't always been so socially savvy. In fact, according to high school buddy Mark Flores, all Lerner ever did in high school was play in the band. So how did the former 34th Street music editor, who spent last semester in London, make it to the top? Perhaps he chose writing after his sister jammed a coffee bean up his nose at the mall, thereby cutting short his budding career as a wine connoisseur. Or maybe it was his love for a certain type of magazine that cemented his interest in publishing. Flores gleefully remembered the fateful day that Lerner first turned him on to the pleasures of the flesh -- on paper, of course. "Kevin introduced me to pornography in the band room," Flores said. But apparently, the pages of Penthouse and Hustler were where Lerner's fantasies would remain. "Poor guy -- I feel bad for him," Flores said dejectedly. "I mean, I guess you could say we were social duds in high school." In fact, it wasn't until college that Lerner's party animal side would emerge. "I would bet that neither Kevin nor I had ever seen a drop of liquor at a high school party," Flores said. According to several sources around the Street office, however, the one-time "social dud" has finally started to explore the finer things in life. (We'll spare you the gruesome, scandalous details.) It's about time. -- Doree Shafrir
