The Undergraduate Assembly played a crucial role in the University's announcement of the new lighting initiative. The UC Brite program was criticized for its slow pace, but now administrators are hopeful 30 moreblocks will be fitted with new lighting under the initiative. UA members recognized the need for student involvement to increase the program's chance for success and acted. They proposed to help landlords pay for lighting improvements using UA funds, which led the University to offer "March Blitz." The student leaders also met with local landlords along with University officials to discuss the new initiative. Having the UA at the meeting supporting administrators probably helped the landlords understand why new lighting needs to be installed. Vice President for Government, Community and Public Affairs Carol Scheman is correct in saying it's up to students to get their landlords to participate in UC Brite. Again, we encourage students and faculty members to talk to their landlords about the lighting program, especially with the new "March Blitz" offer. We congratulate the UA for helping expedite a program that we all want to succeed.
