EDITORIAL: A one-issue UA?

If, as some expect, the new UA has no platform outside of voting to fund InterFraternity Council parties, then the effectiveness of the body as a student advocacy group will be destroyed. The outgoing board, under the leadership of chairperson Tal Golomb, did much to improve the image of the organization by ridding it of the politicking and internal strife that characterized previous UAs. The result was a renewed respect for the UA from University administrators. However, if the incoming representatives choose to focus only on one issue, the credibility of the body will be severly damaged and administrators may not take their requests seriously. This can only hurt undergraduates on campus who count on the UA to be the voice of the student body. This UA has the opportunity to do more than any UA in recent years due to the fact that Golomb forced University officials to respect the UA as an institution and listen to the members' ideas. Now is not the time for student government to stray from this path. Given the body's new-found respect, a one-issue platform would serve only to undue the noble work of the outgoing representatives and cripple the UA's ability to gain the support of the administration. In order to accomplish anything, the new UA must work on behalf of the student body, not just on behalf of the IFC.
