CAMPUS BRIEFS: Wednesday, February 12, 1997

Provost to discuss Perelman project The meeting -- scheduled for March 4 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in McClelland Hall's South Lounge -- will precede the grand opening of the newly renovated McClelland Marketplace. Chodorow said the meeting aims to help familiarize students with the goals of the Perelman Quadrangle. "I decided to hold the meeting when student leaders pointed out that there were many students on campus who had not heard about the project," Chodorow said. "There is a lot of information to share with the student community, and I want to make sure that everyone understands the goals of the project and the way we will reach those goals," he added. As part of the project, renovations to Logan Hall will conclude this December, and work on Irvine Auditorium will begin this summer. Renovations to Houston and Williams halls are scheduled to begin in 1998. Chodorow will also address plans for temporary space for use by Performing Arts groups once Irvine Auditorium and Houston Hall close. -- Tammy Reiss Town watch gets bikes The University's student-run town watch organization is getting some new wheels -- bicycle wheels, that is. PennWatch President Jonathan Brightbill said his group will begin regular patrols later this semester, using four bicycles donated by the Division of Public Safety. Brightbill, a Wharton senior, said the bicycles will enable PennWatch -- whose approximately 20 members already patrol on foot -- to cover a larger area than the one it currently surveys between 39th and 43rd streets. He said students and West Philadelphia residents should feel safer as a result of the visible bicycle patrols. University Police recently donated four bicycles to PennWatch and the Student Activities Council gave $800 to refurbish the bicycles. -- Scott Lanman
