UA Treasurer Schorr elected SAC chairperson

The body's executive committee voted in a new slate of directors. The Student Activities Council Executive Committee elected a new board of directors in late December. SAC, a 120-member group -- which consists of representatives from all campus student organizations -- is led by an executive committee of eight elected members and the Undergraduate Assembly treasurer. The four leadership positions were elected from among this committee. College junior Steve Schorr -- the UA treasurer -- will chair the new board, College sophomore Debbie Posner will serve as vice chairperson, College junior Adena Galinsky as secretary and College junior Keith Blackman as the SAC liaison to the UA. "I think [being elected] is a great opportunity to do a lot of things for SAC," Schorr said. In addition to organizing and running SAC meetings, Schorr said he will work to convince the administration to give SAC more money from the general fee that students pay along with their tuition. He explained that additional funding would enhance student life on campus. This is the second year Schorr has sought the extra money. Although Schorr has not held a SAC officer position before, this semester will be his second term as UA treasurer and on SAC's executive board. He also sat on the body's Finance Committee before an internal reorganization dissolved it. Galinsky and Posner are also returning to the executive committee, as representing, respectively, the Israeli dance troop Ayalah and the Jewish literary magazine Ma'ayan. Galinsky, whose main role will be to take notes at SAC meetings, said she hopes to "live up to the tradition [of] the secretaries in the past [who] have been really colorful characters." Posner, who served as UA liaison last term, said she hopes to act as a "steadying force" on the committee. She said her goals are to strengthen SAC and aid its member groups. Blackman, the newcomer to the executive committee, also has two years experience as part of the main body of SAC. Originally representing Punchbowl as its associate editor, he said he looks forward to his upcoming term as UA liaison. "I think it's good for me," Blackman said. "I enjoy going to SAC meetings, and now I can work behind the scenes." Blackman's duties include attending both UA and SAC meetings and communicating between the two constituencies. SAC members will all vote in February when four members of the Executive Committee will be up for re-election. This relatively quick turnover is meant to reestablish the type of elections that occurred when SAC's board had been organized into both finance and steering committees. The structure enabled more than half the board to remain on hand, with the intention of having older members assist newer ones.
