The College sophomore and newly elected DP campus news editor at times seems to be almost like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. On the one hand, she gave up a starring role in a ballet production when she was seven, just so someone else obviously less talented could have a shot, according to mom, Kathy. But Kathy Katz also admitted that her daughter had "an attitude," especially when asked to clean up her toys. "She'd say, 'You bought them, you pick them up'," the elder Katz recalled. "She was always right when she was little." Since then, her parents said, Marisa's attitude has softened a bit. "The first word she could read was Bloomingdale's," father Richard Katz said. "Now she's into fine wine and three-star restaurants." Katz could have been a star equestrian athlete or a ballet dancer. But a fall off a horse and the desire for more camaraderie led Katz to seek out journalism. Richard Katz said his daughter "screwed up" only once, leaving high school illegally as a junior to go to lunch -- only to be caught because a classmate smashed into her car. Friends were incredulous that the ever-perfect Katz girl had done something wrong. Now, friends and roommates talk about Katz as a neat freak, and one who is a complete "straight arrow." Campus beat reporters probably used to Katz's Dr. Jekyll will just have to wait for the real Katz to come out. -- Randi Feigenbaum
