CAMPUS BRIEFS: Police should move to mini-station this week

Police should move to mini-station this week Security Director Chris Algard explained that the facility will house SpectaGuard and Sensormatic operations, along with the University Police's Special Services and bicycle patrol units. Officials said the 40th Street facility will accommodate these operations until the new Public Safety building -- located on the 4000 block of Chestnut Street -- opens this fall. Vice President for Government, Community and Public Affairs Carol Scheman said the future of the former Special Services facility at 3927 Walnut St. "isn't certain" following the move to the temporary Public Safety facility. "There are no plans yet for what it will be used for," she said. Workers have been busy for the past several weeks painting and fixing up the vacant space. --Scott Lanman and Tammy Reiss Sensormatic may not use hand print system The future of identification will have to wait a little longer. Public Safety Security Director Chris Algard said there are currently no plans to install hand scanners -- one of the most notable aspects of a recently announced contract with the Sensormatic Electronics Corporation -- into residences, contrary to previous reports in The Daily Pennsylvanian. But once the Sensormatic system is installed, the University will have the option of replacing PennCard readers with the futuristic hand scanners. "There is not an active residential project right now," he said. Algard added that he will probably demonstrate sample hand readers in the spring to residential officials. After that, the University will decide whether to integrate the devices into on-campus dormitories. -- Scott Lanman
