LETTER: Helping students find jobs

To the Editor: Smith is right that many, many banks and corporations visit our campus to recruit, yet few in entertainment, publishing and journalism do. But he implies that those of us at CPPS have not invited or courted or sold these organizations on the value of coming to Penn. Nothing could be further from the truth. Theese organizations do not recruit on campuses anywhere in larger numbers. They use other methods to attract new employees, so we are working hard to ensure that Penn students will successfully find jobs in these industries, as their predecessors have. We have an outstanding alumni network, whose members are ready to help Penn students gain entry into their fields. We bring speakers to campus to give students advice; today, alumnus Rich Ross will speak on finding a job in the entertainment industry. We have a career library full of helpful materials containing employment leads. We maintain a web page (http://www.upenn.edu /CPPS) with pointers to a vast array of employment information. We have on-line job listings and internships in fields much broader than those represented by on-campus recruiters. Most importantly, we have a staff of counselors who can advise students on how one enters just about any field a Penn student can imagine. Job hunting is, unfortunately, time consuming and stressful. I hope seniors and all students will use our services; we're here to help all students achieve their goals. Patricia Rose, Director Career Planning and Placement
