University Police officers helped arrest and subdue a murder suspect at 52nd and Chestnut streets at approximately 7:45 p.m. Tuesday night. Officers Len Harrison and Mike Sylvester responded first to an urgent call for assistance from a Philadelphia Police officer who was trying to apprehend the suspect. Moments earlier, the man allegedly shot the man he was robbing, University Police Captain John Richardson said. Police initially reported over special radio channels that the officer and suspect were exchanging gunfire. When Harrison and Sylvester arrived, they saw the Philadelphia officer struggling with the suspect on the ground, Richardson said. The two officers and another team of Penn officers helped regain control of and arrest the suspect. Philadelphia Police found the robbery victim dead of a gunshot wound at 52nd and Market streets. University Police remained at the site until homicide detectives arrived. Police believe 19-year-old Alfred Means was responsible for the shooting. Philadelphia Police also arrested 26-year-old Darrell Diggs on suspicion of being Means's accomplice. While searching Means's back pocket, University Police officers found a .25-caliber automatic gun, loaded with nine bullets. They also found a .22-caliber automatic Lugar weapon close to the crime scene, according to Richardson.
