NEWS BRIEFS: Thursday, October 17, 1996

Nobel laureate dies Nobel laureate dies within days of award Vickrey, who studied and taught economics at Columbia for more than 60 years, suffered a heart attack Friday morning while driving to Boston for the conference of an economics group he founded. He was found at the wheel of his car at the side of the road, Westchester County, N.Y., police said. Vickrey's research, much of which was considered radical when he first began, focused on the economic theory of public policy and the economics of uncertainty. Excitement at Columbia over the Nobel Prize turned to sadness at the news of Vickrey's death. Vickrey was born in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1914 and moved to New York as a child. – Mark Fiore Prof will face trial for attempted rape Management Professor Dan Lovallo will go to court on November 1 for charges -- including attempted rape -- filed against him by a Nursing student. During his pre-trial hearing yesterday, Lovallo agreed to a trial rather than serving jail time. The Wharton professor was arrested last July after a 20-year-old Nursing student filed rape charges against him. The Nursing student charged that Lovallo sexually molested her on April 26, after she lost consciousness in his apartment following a night of drinking. Lovallo's trial will take place at the federal court house in Center City. – Ali Feen Hutch pool faces new problems The Hutchinson Gymnasium pool, originally set to reopen two weeks ago, remains closed due to new problems with the water temperature and leakage, according to Physical Plant Director James Wargo. Wargo explained that the required pool temperature is 84 degrees, but faulty heating has prevented the temperature from eclipsing 78 degrees. He said the pool should reopen once this problem is resolved. He added that Physical Plant must fill the 275,000-gallon pool with 50-degree water and then heat it to 84 degrees in order to solve the problem. In addition to the heating difficulties, the Hutch pool still leaks. Although recent work has stopped past chlorine leakage, Wargo said water now seeps out of the pool. But while correcting the heating problem is necessary for reopening the pool, workers will fix the leakage once the pool has reopened. The Hutch pool, constructed in 1926 as part of the Palestra-Hutch complex, has been closed since August 15. It is slated to close again next summer for extensive repairs. – Scott Lanman
