The shooting took place in the immediate vicinity of a set of properties purchased by the University last week to house the Department of Public Safety. No one involved in the incident was affiliated with the University. University Police responded to a call that a man was bleeding on the sidewalk near the corner of 40th and Chestnut streets and stayed with the shooting victim until a Philadelphia Fire and Rescue ambulance transported him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. University and Philadelphia Police arrested a woman for allegedly shooting the man and recovered a .25 caliber automatic weapon they believe the suspect used in the shooting, Richardson said. The shooting involved a dispute over money between a masseuse and her client, he added. Richardson said the victim was in stable condition after being treated in HUP's trauma department, where doctors said his injury was not life-threatening. The gunshot created an entrance wound in the left side of the man's upper back and an exit wound in the middle of his left abdomen, Richardson said. Last Thursday, University officials bought properties on 4020-4050 Chestnut Street to be used for headquarters for Public Safety, which includes University Police. Joan Gordon said she was working in a building near 40th and Chestnut streets when the shooting victim approached her son outside and asked him to call the police. Gordon and her son sat on the front steps of the building while the man, bleeding through his shirt, waited for police to arrive in the front yard next door, she said. "He was nervous because he didn't know how much blood he was losing," Gordon said. Before the shooting, the man gave the assailant $100, Gordon said the victim told her. The woman told the victim she would "do whatever he wanted," according to Gordon, and the woman shot him after he took his money back and left. Gordon said that when police arrived, the victim told them to arrest the shooter, who was in a building at 4050 Chestnut Street. University Police surrounded the exits of the property and waited for Philadelphia Police to arrive before arresting the suspect. · In a separate incident yesterday, a man snatched a gold necklace from a University employee on 40th and Pine streets at 1:45 p.m., Richardson said. The robber fled west on Pine Street in a white car, he added.
